We’re continuing to work through Jeremy Daly’s 20 “easy” steps to switch from RDBMS to DynamoDB, using Babbl as our example application. In this post we’ll get some serious knowledge from steps six through ten - videos and AWS documentation.

Step Six

Put your head in the microwave for 3 seconds (or however long is necessary for you to forget what data normalization and third normal form are). 🤤

Done! I think. Not really - it’ll take me a long time to get rid of normalization, and I’m not even normal (third form or other).

Step Seven

Watch Rick Houlihan’s Advanced Design Patterns for Amazon DynamoDB (DAT403-R) talk from AWS re:Invent 2017. 😯

Done! Notes will follow during our second watching in step nine

Step Eight

Watch Rick Houlihan’s Amazon DynamoDB Deep Dive: Advanced Design Patterns for DynamoDB (DAT401) talk from AWS re:Invent 2018. 😮

Done! Again, notes coming up next.

Step Nine

Clean up all the tiny pieces of your brain splattered around the room, then regroup, and watch them again, this time at half speed. Take notes. 🤯

Easy enough in principle. In practice, I chose to make time to spend with my wife and our infant son ahead of starting my new job tomorrow (which I am crazy excited about - stay tuned). I’m going to park this here; maybe I can continue it as part of my official duties.
